Villas-Boas: Man City defeat would all but end Chelsea’s title hopes

André Villas-Boas admits his side cannot afford to lose against Manchester City if they are to keep their title hopes alive

André Villas-Boas insists Chelsea must get at least a point against Manchester City at Stamford Bridge on Monday or face an “extremely difficult” task in clawing their way back into the Premier League title race.

Villas-Boas’s side are currently 10 points behind Roberto Mancini’s pace-setters and the Chelsea manager concedes that losing any more ground on the Eastlands club would all but dump the Blues out of the running for top spot.

“When you see a [Premier League] leader of this dimension there is never a good time to play them because they are outstanding week in week out,” Villas-Boas said.

“Either we continue to challenge for the Premier League if we win or draw, or the Premiership becomes extremely difficult if we lose. To be 13 points away would be a big, big distance, not that it is impossible to recover but that’s the reality.

“There is no quitting but 13 points will be a massive gap. We have to see what happens after the December fixtures, so let’s wait and see and speak about it in January to see who is competing really for the Premiership. I think it would give everybody a good idea.”

City have only dropped four points so far this season, but Villas-Boas is confident his side can end the Citizens’ unbeaten league run at Stamford Bridge on Monday.

He continued: “We recovered a couple of points recently from 12 to 10 points, and getting back to seven would be ideal for us because it puts Man City very close. I think 13 means a difficult task to do, but not impossible for sure.

“Motivation has been top for them and that is decisive. The further they go on in the league with the amount of wins they’ve been having the further they believe this can be their year and this has a major impact if you are not allowed to relax.

“Let’s continue to pursue, there is a lot of belief but it is difficult to find weaknesses in a top quality side like Man City at the moment.”
