Arsène Wenger pleased with strength of Arsenal squad
Arsène Wenger heaped praise on Arsenal's squad players following their late victory at Villa Park on Wednesday
Arsène Wenger believes Arsenal’s strength in depth was a key factor behind their triumph at Aston Villa on Wednesday.
Yossi Benayoun, who is yet to start a league game for the Gunners, came off the bench to nod home Robin van Persie’s corner in the 87th minute after Marc Albrighton had cancelled out the Dutchman’s first-half penalty soon after the break.
“The result showed the importance of the squad but also the quality of the spirit,” Wenger told Arsenal’s website “That makes a difference if you have players who come on that have a real desire to help the team.
“You always have a chance because teams have to fight so hard against us that in the last 20 minutes fresh players can have a big impact. Benayoun and Rosicky did and that’s why we were very grateful after the game.”
Wenger, whose side next play Wolves at Emirates Stadium on 27 December, reserved special praise for Laurent Koscielny, who has been deployed at right-back after Johan Djourou limped out of last weekend’s defeat at Manchester City.
“He is a special player and he is starting slowly to get credit,” continued the Arsenal boss. “Let’s not forget that before the Man City game we didn’t know if he would play or not because he had flu. He doesn’t speak a lot but his performances speak for him.”
