André Villas-Boas has heaped praise on Didier Drogba, adding that talks over an extension to the striker’s Chelsea contact are still ongoing.

The 33-year-old Ivory Coast international was in superb form in midweek as he inspired the Blues to victory over Valencia for Chelsea to book their place in the last 16 of the Champions League, scoring twice and setting up a third in an impressive 3-0 win at Stamford Bridge.

Drogba is reportedly holding out for the offer of a two-year deal, with the Londoners said to have only tabled a one-year contract to date.

“His level of performance has been outstanding, helping the club and team-mates,” said Villas-Boas, whose side take on Premier League leaders Manchester City at Stamford Bridge on Monday.

“Of course, the club have to agree that players who perform are the players who should continue. It’s an ongoing talk with him and his people.

“We also have to recall that he’s going to the African Nations Cup and won’t be back until 12 February, so there’s a lot to decide.

“But his professionalism and integrity will never be in question, regardless with what happens with his contract.”
