A delighted Roberto Mancini reflected on a “deserved” victory after Manchester City edged past Arsenal to reclaim the Premier League top spot on Sunday.

David Silva’s 53rd-minute goal was all that separated the two sides in the end after a thoroughly entertaining top flight clash at the Etihad Stadium.

City leapfrogged United back into first place after Sir Alex Ferguson’s men temporarily topped the table following their 2-0 win at Queens Park Rangers earlier in the day – and Mancini declared that his side deserved the three points.

“It was a very important [win] after [Monday’s defeat at] Chelsea, because against Chelsea we didn’t deserve to lose the game,” he told Sky Sports.

“Today was a fantastic game. Not for me because I am the manager but for the supporters, because the game was open until the end.

“I think that we deserved to beat Arsenal. They are playing very, very well but it was a fantastic performance from us.

“We wanted to win this game after [the defeat by Chelsea], we wanted to go on the top [of the table] again but we know that the season is long. If we work hard we can continue to stay at the top.”

Meanwhile, Arsenal boss Arsène Wenger was left to rue his side’s missed opportunities, with Thomas Vermaelen coming closest to finding an equaliser for the Gunners with two efforts late in the second half.

“I feel we had the chances to score and we played to score goals,” said Wenger. “To come out of the game losing after such a good run is always difficult to take but you can take some encouragement from the quality of the performance we produced.

“Our belief has to be intact because to lose a game like that is very frustrating for the players. But we have shown outstanding spirit again so it’s a good basis to build on and to improve again.”
