Man United 5 Wigan 0: Sir Alex thrilled with attacking display
Sir Alex Ferguson says Manchester United are hitting top form after an impressive attacking performance against Wigan Athletic
Sir Alex Ferguson hailed Manchester United’s attacking prowess after a Dimitar Berbatov hat-trick helped the Red Devils thrash 10-man Wigan Athletic and move level on points with Manchester City at the top of the table.
Park Ji-Sung opened the scoring with a simple finish after eight minutes before Wigan’s Conor Sammon was given his marching orders for catching Michael Carrick in the face.
Berbatov netted either side of the break to cement United’s lead – and there was still time for Antonio Valencia to add a fourth before the Bulgarian striker completed his treble from the penalty spot.
And Ferguson, whose side now only trail derby rivals City on goal difference, was delighted by United’s ruthlessness in front of goal after successive five-goal hauls against Fulham and Wigan.
“As I said some weeks ago, somebody was going to suffer,” Ferguson told MUTV. “We’re really hitting good form now and there’s a real goal threat about us from all departments. If we’re top of the league or joint top with City by New Year’s Day I’ll be happy.”
Berbatov has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford in recent weeks, with Paris Saint-Germain and Anzhi Makhachkala both reported to be interested in the Bulgaria international.
But Ferguson heaped praise on the 30-year-old following his heroics against Wigan before admitting the former Tottenham striker has endured a difficult few months after falling behind Wayne Rooney, Javier Hernández and Danny Welbeck in the pecking order at Old Trafford.
He continued: “It was the right game for him. I needed his height for set-pieces against us and he’s weighed in with a hat-trick. We’re really pleased for him and it helps with confidence.
“Dimitar hasn’t had the best of starts to the season in terms of selection given the options I have with Welbeck, Rooney, Hernandez, so I’m really happy for him.”
