Martin O'Neill hoping to get his Sunderland reign off to a winning start against fellow strugglers Blackburn Rovers on Sunday

New Sunderland manager Martin O’Neill admits the Black Cats are in “trouble” – but is targeting a victory over fellow strugglers Blackburn on Sunday to get his reign off to a winning start.

Sunderland, who sacked Steve Bruce last week following a dismal start to the season, are currently in 17th in the table, just one point above the relegation zone going into Sunday’s crunch clash.

“Obviously we’re in a little bit of trouble at the moment. We just have to try and win,” O’Neill said at his first Sunderland news conference.

“Sunday is very important game for us – the players are aware of that, everyone is aware of that. We need to start winning some matches.

“It’s a genuine privilege to manage the football club. It’s incredibly exciting to be back in the Premier League, and fantastic to be manager here.

“I feel I am ready to come back. Sunderland’s a fantastic football club, I really want to do well. The opportunity has arisen, and I want to take it.”
