Alex McLeish remains hopeful Aston Villa can complete the loan signing of Republic of Ireland striker Robbie Keane over the weekend.

The Villa boss has made no secret of his desire to bring the 31-year-old LA Galaxy forward to the Midlands during the Major League Soccer off-season – and the Scot says the chances of a two-month loan deal going through are now better than 50-50.

“We are having a look at it and trying to pursue it. That is the latest although nothing is done and dusted yet,” McLeish told a news conference. “If we don’t know by Monday, then it probably will not be done.

“We are certainly pursuing it and at the moment, both parties are keen. I would say the chances are a bit better than 50-50.”

McLeish, whose side are 13th in the Premier League table, believes Keane’s experience would be a valuable asset for his team.

“Robbie has got massive experience as a striker,” he continued. “We have a couple of good, young players but at the moment they are still a little bit fragmented, their appearances – 10 minutes here, 15 minutes there. Nathan [Delfouneso] has had a couple of games but I feel we need the old head.

“Robbie is a great character as well. Players can light up the dressing room too and these factors are all so important in this professional game.

“I just think the glove fits. He can score goals. He is capable of hurting other teams with his team play. He has also been one of the brighter guys around football for a long, long time.

“He is good in the dressing room as I said and he is highly motivated too because he has got a certain competition to play at the end of the season with his country so he wants to maintain his level.”
