Arsenal 1 Leeds 0: Netting winner was amazing, says Thierry Henry
Thierry Henry made a fairytale comeback for Arsenal by netting the winner to down Leeds and send them through to round four
Thierry Henry admitted it was an amazing feeling to score for Arsenal again after the veteran striker netted the winner against Leeds to send the Gunners into the fourth round of the FA Cup on Monday night.
The 34-year-old came off the bench with Arsenal struggling to break down their Championship opposition – and with the stage set, Henry produced a trademark finish past Leeds goalkeeper Andy Lonergan to put the Londoners ahead with 12 minutes remaining.
“It’s kind of weird,” Henry said. “I came back from holiday 15 days ago. I never thought I was going to play for Arsenal again or score a winner.
“I don’t know what to say. I love the club and I hope I can do more. I hope it won’t be the last one. The feeling I had when I scored was amazing.
“I rejoined the club as a fan; before I wasn’t. Scoring a goal when you support the team, now I know how some of the guys who played for Liverpool or Man United or Chelsea felt when they scored a goal for the club they support.
“With one opportunity, it’s very important, you don’t know if you’ll have a second. You have to make sure you take it. I took it well.”
Arsenal struggled to break down the visitors in the first half as Maraoune Chamakh’s poor movement up front restricted the home side, while Aaron Ramsey was unable to direct his attempts on target.
But the introduction of Henry lifted the Gunners and his fairytale return was complete when Alex Song’s precise pass picked out the French striker, who curled his finish past Lonergan to put the home side ahead in the 78th minute and net his 227th goal for the club.
Substitute Ross McCormack almost spoiled the Arsenal party when he came close to netting a late equaliser – but his header was saved by Wojciech Szczesny.
Arsenal boss Arsène Wenger said: “It’s a written story a little bit. Of course, Thierry brought his class but it showed how much it means to him to make the finish.
“It’s not something you predict before the game. It’s great that he is back here and got the goal that qualifies us for the next round.
“The dressing room has plenty of people in there, it’s a little bit euphoric because everybody is happy for Thierry of course.”
