Chelsea 4 Portsmouth 0: We want to win the FA Cup, says Di Matteo
Chelsea assistant manager Roberto Di Matteo insists the Blues want to win the FA Cup after their 4-0 victory over Portsmouth
Roberto Di Matteo vowed Chelsea would take the FA Cup seriously after the Blues set up a fourth-round tie with MK Dons or Queens Park Rangers courtesy of a 4-0 victory over Portsmouth at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea fielded a full-strength side for their third-round clash against Pompey and Juan Mata, Ramires and Frank Lampard all netted to seal a comfortable win for the west Londoners.
“It is a competition we would like to win and today we have gone a step further towards the target,” said Di Matteo. “I don’t think we ever said we wouldn’t play a strong team so it wasn’t really a surprise.”
Chelsea started slowly and André Villas-Boas’ side didn’t make the breakthrough until the 48th minute, when Mata finished from close range.
Portsmouth continued to frustrate the Blues but Ramires sealed the victory with a quick-fire double as full-time approached before Frank Lampard added gloss to the scoreline with a fourth in stoppage time.
Di Matteo underlined the importance of Mata’s opener, with Pompey defending deep for much of the contest.
“I thought it was a very good all-round performance,” he added. “Portsmouth made it very hard, especially in the first 45 minutes, and it is always difficult to break an opponent down and find a space with so many players.
“It was just a matter of scoring the first goal and we were always confident we were going to be able to do that. In the second half we got further forward and secured the win. I think it was a matter of finding the spaces and keeping possession.
“We knew the chances would come and that is exactly what happened in the second half.”
