Manchester City target Daniele De Rossi ‘will stay at Roma’
AS Roma coach Luis Enrique believes Daniele De Rossi will stay in Rome, despite interest from Manchester City and Real Madrid
Luis Enrique insists Manchester City target Daniele De Rossi will not be leaving AS Roma in the January transfer window.
City boss Roberto Mancini recently fuelled speculation linking the 28-year-old, whose contract with the Serie A side expires in the summer, with a move to Eastlands by describing him as “the perfect fit” for the Premier League leaders.
But Roma manager Enrique is unconcerned by the transfer speculation and expects the Italy international to sign a new deal to stay at the Stadio Olimpico.
“We haven’t talked about this [De Rossi leaving Roma],” said Enrique. “As far as I’m concerned, I’m sure Daniele De Rossi will remain at Roma, but this is just my opinion, and everything is up to the club and the player.
“They’re talking about this and I believe he will remain in Roma, since this is what he wants. I have no doubt that he will remain at Roma, I’m not worried about anything.”
Enrique did admit his frustration at Roma not having tied De Rossi down to a long-term deal sooner, with Real Madrid also said to have joined City in the pursuit of the midfielder.
“Players of Daniele’s quality should not get to expiration – the renewal of the contract [should have] come long ago,” added the Roma manager.
“Many players, however, do not think only about money, we know what Daniele represents for the Romans and what Rome means to Daniele. We won’t lose him in January and even in summer.”
