Everton’s Darron Gibson: Time was right to leave Man United
Midfielder Darron Gibson believes it was the "right time" for him to leave Manchester United after signing for Everton on Friday
Darron Gibson has admitted that the pursuit of regular first-team football was the main reason behind his decision to move to Everton from Manchester United.
The Republic of Ireland midfielder signed a four-and-a-half year deal at Goodison Park on Friday after securing the move to Merseyside for a reported fee of £1m, with a further £1m appearance-related.
“Obviously it’s a different challenge for me,” the 24-year-old told a news conference. “With Manchester United, you’re winning every week and playing well every week. Everton is a great club, it’s a big club. They don’t win as many games as United do but I’m looking forward to the challenge.
“I think it was time for me to move on from United and I think Everton is the right club for me to be at. With the Euros coming up I need to play games if I’m going to get in the Republic of Ireland team, so being here and playing every week will give me the opportunity of playing for Ireland as well.”
Manager David Moyes said of Gibson: “I can see a hunger. He is young and wants to prove himself.”
