Harry Redknapp expects Giovani dos Santos to leave Tottenham
Harry Redknapp admits Giovani Dos Santos is likely to leave Tottenham after he scored in FA Cup win over Cheltenham
Harry Redknapp has admitted Giovani dos Santos wants to leave Tottenham Hotspur after the Mexican attacking midfielder scored in Spurs’ 3-0 FA Cup third-round victory over Cheltenham.
Dos Santos, 22, moved to White Hart Lane from Barcelona in June 2008 but has struggled to make an impact, with Redknapp preferring alternative attacking options.
“I think Gio will move if we get the right player [to replace him],” Redknapp said. “He’s looking to move to be honest. We had a big bid from Italy last summer but he wants to go back to Spain.
“He needs to play and to be fit and train hard, and when he does that, he’s got a chance. He’s got talent, he’s got ability, he just needs to work harder in training and get fitter.
“It’s difficult for him here. We’ve already got Gareth Bale, Aaron Lennon and Niko Kranjcar, who was excellent today.
“He’s a class player and he’s unlucky not to play more, but it’s hard. He’s a fantastic footballer and a great boy.”
Niko Kranjcar created Tottenham’s first goal after 23 minutes when he released, Dos Santos who chipped his shot over Cheltenham goalkeeper Scott Brown with Defoe prodding the ball into the net.
Russian striker Roman Pavlyuchenko doubled Spurs’ lead just before half-time after good work from Defoe and Dos Santos, before the Mexico international completed the victory with three minutes remaining.
“There were a few lads who needed a game and it was important to get a game into them,” Redknapp said.
“Those games are as straightforward as you make them. They’re never easy but we stuck a couple away and were always comfortable after that.”
