City and United wins cap ‘perfect week’ for Liverpool – Daniel Agger
Daniel Agger was delighted by Liverpool's success in the domestic cups with at least one Wembley final on the horizon
Daniel Agger described Liverpool’s 2-1 victory over Manchester United in the FA Cup on Saturday as the “perfect” end to a great week for the Anfield outfit.
Liverpool sealed their place in the Carling Cup final with a 3-2 aggregate victory over Manchester City in midweek, while the Reds moved into the FA Cup fifth round thanks to a dramatic late win against United at Anfield, courtesy of Dirk Kuyt’s 87th-minute winner.
“It’s been the perfect week for Liverpool in the cups, definitely. We got what we wanted,” Agger told Liverpool’s website.
“We always take confidence going forward when we win, but to win in the cup and get through to the next round gives you more confidence.
“It’s an important game at Wolves. We want to get further up the table. It’s not good enough where we are now, so we need the three points.”
The 27-year-old Dane has forged a successful centre-half partnership with Martin Skrtel this season as Liverpool’s veteran defender Jamie Carragher has been largely dropped to the bench.
And the Denmark international scored his first Liverpool goal when he netted the opener against United at Anfield – his first since a Europa League tie with Benfica back in April 2010.
“It’s always a good feeling when the ball hits the back of the net,” he said. “Just like any player would say, the most important thing is the win, but to score is always a nice feeling.
“It was a good goal from Dirk, but it was also a great set-up as well. Andy did really well to flick it on.
“It was a great result. To beat United at home is always nice, especially in the FA Cup.”
