Four-time Olympic champion Sir Chris Hoy will lead a powerful British team at the UCI World Cup this month, the official London 2012 test event at the new Olympic Park velodrome.

Performance director David Brailsford is using the event – along with April’s UCI Track World Championships in Melbourne – as a key trial in the numerous selection dilemmas facing him and includes eight Olympic medallists in the 16-strong squad.

Hoy will be joined in the sprint squad by fellow Olympic medallists Ross Edgar, Jason Kenny and Victoria Pendleton while Geraint Thomas returns to track duty in a powerful men’s endurance team.

Wendy Houvenaghel, an Olympic individual pursuit silver medallist in Beijing, leads the women’s endurance team – as she seeks to retain her world team pursuit title ahead of the Olympics.

Which two cyclists will join her remains a matter of contention with Dani King, Joanna Rowsell and Laura Trott all boosting impressive recent claims.

“The World Cup in London has added significance given that it’s the first major event to be held at the Olympic venue. We are using the test event as a learning opportunity for our Olympic preparations and have selected a full-strength squad accordingly,” said Brailsford.

“The riders and staff are looking forward to gaining race experience at the London Velodrome and it’s always fantastic for us to have the support of a sell-out home crowd.”

any international teams are also sending strong squads, in particular Australia and Germany, whose teams will be lead by world champions Anna Meares and Robert Forstemann respectively.

In total 340 riders from 48 nations will compete and tickets for the event sold out within minutes when they went on sale last November.

“The standard of riders we have attracted is phenomenal with most of the world’s best riders participating,” said Locog sports director Debbie Jevans.

“The athletes will be competing for the first time in the Olympic venue in front of thousands of fans so we are looking forward to an exceptional event.

“As well as it being a vital competition for the athletes, it is key for Locog in terms of our testing to ensure that we are ready at Games time. We will be testing the overall venue operations, the track, the timing and results and our workforce.”
