Paul Scholes is confident Manchester United can catch fierce rivals Manchester City in the race for the Premier League title.

Both of the Manchester clubs emerged victorious from a testing Sunday, with City claiming a dramatic late win over Tottenham Hotspur, and United sealing a 2-1 victory at Arsenal.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s defending champions remain three points behind league leaders City – but the veteran midfielder is convinced the Red Devils will close the gap.

“Obviously both teams won [on Sunday] so we are still where we were,” Scholes told Sky Sports. “I think we had the tougher game because it is always more difficult to go away, and we’ve got the three points.”

“There’s still three months of the season to go and hopefully we’ll be in the right place when the time comes.

“Obviously City are going well at the minute but we are only three points behind and funny things can happen towards the end of the season. We just have to make sure we look after ourselves and get the right results.”

The 37-year-old midfielder made a shock return to the United set-up at the turn of the year, coming out of retirement and featuring in all three of his side’s victories since.

But the former England international has played down the impact of his comeback. “I don’t think I’ve had too big an effect,” he said.

“[Playing again] does take a bit of getting used to but the advantage I’d had was that I’d been at the club for the last four or five months doing a bit of coaching.

“I’d obviously seen the lads every day so it wasn’t too difficult to settle back in.”
