Tottenham’s Gareth Bale stars in Uefa.com 2011 dream team
Tottenham Hotspur's Gareth Bale named in the Uefa.com users' team of the year for 2011 as La Liga players dominate XI
Gareth Bale has been named in the Uefa.com users’ Team of the Year for 2011 after a sparkling 12 months with Tottenham Hotspur.
Bale, the only Premier League representative on the list, is the first Spurs player to ever appear in the fantasy XI and the Wales international is joined by the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola was picked as Europe’s top manager after guiding the Catalan giants to five trophies in 2011, including La Liga and Champions League successes to take his tally to 13 trophies from three-and-a-half years in charge at Camp Nou.
Spain midfielder Xavi was the player to receive the most individual votes and has said he will donate €100,000 cheque from Uefa to the International Committee of the Red Cross.
Goalkeeper Iker Casillas heads the Real Madrid contingent and, like club team-mate Ronaldo, appears in the side for the fifth year running.
Ronaldo, chosen alongside Messi as a forward in the dream team, previously figured as a right midfielder in past editions and his six appearances overall is a total matched only by Barcelona defender Carles Puyol.
By contrast, the third Madrid player picked, defender Marcelo, makes the cut for the first time.
