Roberto Mancini insisted his side’s performance was not important after Manchester City edged past Wigan to move three points clear at the top of the Premier League on Monday.

Edin Dzeko nodded home the eventual winner after 22 minutes, when the Bosnian striker rose highest to meet David Silva’s excellent delivery from the left.

Wigan battled hard after the break, making it difficult for the league leaders to find their usual passing rhythm, with James McCarthy forcing a brilliant save from Joe Hart late on.

And Mancini reflected on a crucial win for his side after the game, with City set to host high-flying Tottenham Hotspur at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

“It was really important to win tonight,” Mancini told Sky Sports. “We knew that it would be difficult because Wigan play very well and Roberto Martinez is a fantastic manager, but it was really important to beat them.

“At this moment we have a lot of players injured – it’s a big problem, so for this reason it’s not important to play very well but it’s important to get good results.”

A furious Mancini waved an imaginary card on the touchline after Maynor Figueroa was only shown a yellow card by referee Martin Atkinson for a deliberate handball on the halfway line with Sergio Aguero ready to pounce.

But the Italian manager refused to be drawn on the incident after the game. “I don’t want to talk about the referee and that situation,” he said.

The City boss instead chose to heap praise on Dzeko after the striker ended his 11-game run without a goal by netting for the first time since November.

“I am very happy for him because he deserved to score,” said Mancini. “He scored this very important goal for us and now I hope that he can continue it in the next game.”

Looking ahead to the visit of Spurs next weekend, Mancini added: “It’s a big game because Tottenham are having a fantastic season. They are a big team and I think it will be a fantastic match on Sunday.”
