Arsene Wenger admits Arsenal will need to be “exceptionally consistent” if they want to finish in the top four of the Premier League.

The Arsenal manager watched his side suffer three consecutive league defeats against Fulham, Manchester United and Swansea in January – but the Gunners bounced back with a 7-1 thrashing of Blackburn after a draw with Bolton to close the gap on fourth-placed Chelsea to three points.

However, Wenger concedes that the Emirates outfit are in danger of missing out on a top-four finish unless his side are able to string together a series of positive results.

“We had a good week last week. We had a good result against Aston Villa and a good performance against Bolton,” Wenger told the club’s website.

“We had the same number of chances at the Reebok that we had against Blackburn but we scored on Saturday. We still have real hope that we can finish the season the strongest. We have a good spirit and desire within the group – and we have quality.

“We know that with the position we are in we need an exceptional consistency, so that is the challenge we have in front of us at Sunderland.”
