David Platt hails Mario Balotelli display as Man City sink Rovers
Coach David Platt is full of praise for Mario Balotelli after striker scored to help Manchester City down Blackburn Rovers
David Platt was full of praise for Mario Balotelli after the striker scored to help Manchester City to a comfortable 3-0 win over Blackburn Rovers on Saturday.
The Italy forward put City ahead in the first half before goals from Sergio Aguero and Edin Dzeko after the break secured the victory to fire the league leaders five points clear.
Balotelli, who was making his return following a four-game suspension, turned home Aleksandar Kolarov’s cross to give Roberto Mancini’s side the lead after 30 minutes.
“It was a good finish – I didn’t realise how good until I saw it on the video. Look at the run he made to get there as well,” said coach David Platt.
“He was disciplined today, his work rate was excellent and his temperament was good. He can be pleased with his afternoon’s work.
“When a team defends as deep as they did you have to give the ball to players who are closely guarded. You’re bound to get kicked, but I never thought there was going to be any reaction.”
Looking ahead to the closing stages of the season, Platt added: “I don’t think you can go 38 games and always play the sort of football we were playing earlier in the season. There are games where you have to grind out the result.
“We’ve a dozen games left and there will be a mixture – there will be games when things are not as fluid as they can be, but we will still have to get results.”
Meanwhile, City boss Mancini refused to get carried away with the one-sided victory. “We had a good February [with five wins out of five] but now we need to do a good March. It is important to be there at the end of May,” he said.
