Barry and Milner back Man City’s Hart for England captaincy
Gareth Barry and James Milner hail their Manchester City team-mate Joe Hart as one of the best goalkeepers in the world
Gareth Barry and James Milner believe their Manchester City team-mate Joe Hart should be handed the England captaincy.
The 24-year-old goalkeeper produced another impressive display in Sunday’s 1-0 victory over Aston Villa, which was the latest in a string of eye-catching performances by the England international.
Barry says the Shrewsbury Town youth graduate is his preferred candidate to succeed John Terry as the skipper of the national side.
“I’d give it to Joe,” said Barry. “Hart has been fantastic all season. It wasn’t just against Villa on Sunday that he’s made a world-class save, he’s done it in a few games.
“That is why he is being talked about as one of the best in the world.”
And Milner, capped 23 times by England, backed Barry’s suggestion and believes Hart is one of the best goalkeepers in the world on current form.
“It’s nothing to do with me in terms of the decision,” Milner added. “But he is a great character, he talks, he is not afraid to say what he thinks.
“I’m sure he is going to be England’s number one for a long time, so he is as good a candidate for captain as anyone.
“He has been absolutely unbelievable for us this season. He’s a world-class goalkeeper, definitely one of the best I’ve played with, and he is going to get better and better as well.”
