Roberto Mancini insisted he is ready to welcome Carlos Tévez back into the Manchester City first-team after watching his side thrash Porto on Wednesday.

The Argentina striker released a statement on Tuesday apologising “sincerely and unreservedly” for his conduct in recent months, while withdrawing his appeal against a club fine of six weeks’ wages.

And Mancini confirmed that he will hold talks with Tévez on Thursday, but admitted it will take the forward some time to regain full fitness after such a lengthy absence.

“I accept what Carlos said in his statement and tomorrow I will talk with him,” Mancini told ESPN. “I have no problem, I think that maybe he needs two or three weeks to train, then some games.”

City booked their place in the Europa League last 16 with a comprehensive 6-1 aggregate victory over holders Porto. The hosts took the lead after just 19 seconds when Yaya Touré slid Sergio Aguero through on goal – and the Argentina striker duly fired home his 20th goal of the season.

Edin Dzeko, David Silva and new signing David Pizarro then added gloss to the scoreline towards the end of the second half after Porto were reduced to 10 men when Rolando was dismissed in the 77th minute.

“We played a good game,” Mancini said afterwards. “It was difficult, but we knew this before the game because Porto is a top team. In the end we won 4-0 and maybe that’s too much but it was important that we reached [the last 16].

“If it’s possible, we want to play in the final. We know that will be difficult because in the Europa League there are top squads.

“But we want to go to the final and for this reason we’ll play always with the best team. We have 20 good players and we can do some changes every game.”
