NBA: Blake Griffin and LeBron James excel in the art of dunking

Iarla Duignan takes a look at the best dunks of a thrilling NBA season so far, with Blake Griffin and LeBron James starring

LeBron James sent the NBA into a frenzy with his thrilling dunk during Miami Heat’s victory over the Chicago Bulls – but his effort was topped by Los Angeles Clipper’s Blake Griffin on Monday.

Here is our pick of the top five dunks in the NBA so far this season:

1. Blake Griffin v Oklahoma City Thunder

When Blake Griffin dunked over Timofey Mozgov last year, it seemed impossible to top. But Griffin raised the bar again. The dunk had Twitter blowing up in a frenzy. LeBron James weighed in: “Dunk of the Year!! @blakegriffin just dunked on Kendrick Perkins so hard!! Wow!! I guess I’m #2 now. Move over #6”

Being a ‘non-contact’ sport, being dunked on is the highest form of embarrassment bestowed on any player. Kendrick Perkins will forever be ‘that other guy’ in the posters and video clips for some time.

2. Lebron James v Chicago Bulls

John Lucas may look small in comparison to most NBA players, but he is 6ft tall. Any time you jump over a fully grown man, you’ll be high up the list. Control the pass about two foot above the rim and score with one hand, while jumping over a man – now that’s skill. As good as it was, Vince Carter still sets the standard for jumping over someone for a dunk.

3. Paul George v Minnesota Timberwolves

Paul George may not be dunking over anyone and there is no one else in the picture, but this is just so pretty. Shades of Dominique Wilkins on the fast break with the double pump reverse slam.

4. Chris Bosh v Charlotte Bobcats

Players are told not to bite on Chris Bosh’s pump fakes. After his team-mate does just that, DJ White gets the punishment as the Miami Heat star dunks over him after taking it strong to the rim. Pity about the landing though.

5. Tyreke Evans v Utah Jazz

Tyreke Evans doesn’t need a second invitation when the defence opens up in front of him on the break, and he finishes with the statue of liberty spike. Earl Watson clearly wasn’t thinking right challenging Sacramento Kings guard at the rim and got his just rewards.
