Daniel Sturridge wants to make the same impact that Michael Owen made at the World Cup in 1998 if the Chelsea striker is included in England’s squad for Euro 2012.

An 18-year-old Owen burst on the international scene with a stunning strike against Argentina in the second round – a moment which provided inspiration to England’s next generation of footballers, including Sturridge.

“When I was younger I really enjoyed watching Michael Owen,” said the Blues striker.

“When he scored at the World Cup against Argentina it was amazing. I think everyone will remember that because I remember watching that game as a youngster and thinking, ‘wow, this guy’s amazing’.”

The 22-year-old’s impressive form for the Blues this season earned him a call-up to the England squad under Fabio Capello, making his senior debut against Sweden in November 2011.

The Blues forward, who was named man of the match in the 3-2 defeat by the Netherlands at Wembley in February, wants to emulate Owen as well as other great England strikers such as Alan Shearer and Ian Wright.

“Alan Shearer was a great goalscorer,” added Sturridge, who swapped Manchester City for Chelsea in July 2009 in a £4.5m move. “He stepped up in so many competitions. Players like Ian Wright and Andy Cole, too.

“I’ve always looked up to great English strikers because I think they’re the ones who pave the way for the youth of nowadays and I would never forget what those players have done because they’re the ones we strive to be like when we’re young.

“Hopefully I’ll be trying to do what they’ve done previously in Europe.”

Daniel Sturridge, along with Iker Casillas, Lukas Podolski, Giuseppe Rossi, Karim Benzema, is an ambassador for Team Hyundai, a new initiative for Uefa Euro 2012. Find out more at:
