Pep Guardiola has hailed Athletic Bilbao boss Marcelo Bielsa as the “best coach on the planet” following the Basque side’s 5-3 aggregate victory over Manchester United on Thursday.

Biesla’s side knocked the Premier League champions out of the Europa League with a 2-1 win in the second leg of their last-16 tie, setting up a quarter-final clash against German outfit Schalke.

And Guardiola expects a difficult game when the Catalan outfit meet Bilbao in the Copa del Rey final on 25 May after Barcelona were held to a 2-2 draw at San Mamés in the Spanish league in November.

“Bielsa is currently the best coach on the planet,” said Guardiola. “We’re lucky to have him in La Liga so that we can learn from him.

“Bilbao’s qualification to the Europa League quarter-finals is a gift for the game.

“Bielsa’s teams are authentic, different and unique. The only way we can win in San Mamés is to show more courage than them.”
