Peter Schmeichel: Criticism of Man United’s David de Gea was ‘terrible’
Former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel has backed David De Gea to flourish at Old Trafford
Peter Schmeichel has come out in support of Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea after the Spaniard was criticised for a series of abject performances since moving to Old Trafford.
De Gea, 21, made a stuttering start to life in the Premier League after sealing his transfer from Atletico Madrid last summer following a string of high-profile errors.
But United legend Schmeichel was full of praise for the Spanish shot-stopper, who has impressed for the Red Devils in recent weeks.
“I think [the criticism aimed at De Gea] was terrible,” said Schmeichel. “It’s not what England is all about, it’s not what I have experienced with England.
“I felt really sorry for him because England, for me, is all about fair play and I just could not recognise English people treating someone like him in that way.
“He’s only 21 years of age. Any beginning is difficult but when you open the newspaper every day and it’s all about how bad you are, at some point even you start to believe that.
“It takes enormous character and enormous mental strength to work your way through that. But he’s done that – he’s convinced people that he is a good goalkeeper.”
