Sir Alex Ferguson has rejected the accusation that bringing Paul Scholes back into the Manchester United first-team was a sign of “desperation” by the defending Premier League champions.

Manchester City’s football development executive and former Arsenal captain Patrick Vieira described United’s move to ask Scholes to come out of retirement as a sign of “weakness”.

But the Red Devils manager laughed off Vieira’s remarks and suggested the former France midfielder was trying his hand at mind games under instruction from those above him at Eastlands.

Ferguson also questioned Roberto Mancini’s decision to allow Carlos Tevez make a return to the club and play the Argentine forward in City’s 2-1 victory over Chelsea on Wednesday night.

“If it’s desperation bringing back the best midfielder in Britain for the last 20 years then I think we can accept that,” said Ferguson. “I think he [Vieira] was programmed for that.

“Roberto had a wee dig a couple of weeks back. We’re all going to play our hand that way. There will be plenty of ammunition for that.

“If you talk about desperation, they played a player the other night who refused to go on the pitch. The manager said he’d never play again and he takes a five-month holiday in Argentina. What is that? Could that come under the description of desperation?”
