Steven Gerrard an inspiration at Liverpool, admits Pepe Reina
Pepe Reina describes Steven Gerrard as an "inspiration" to everyone at Liverpool after the captain's hat-trick against Everton
Pepe Reina has described Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard as an “inspiration” to the other players at the club after the midfielder scored a stunning hat-trick in the Merseyside derby on Tuesday.
Gerrard has struggled with injuries throughout the season, but the Reds’ Spanish goalkeeper Reina is confident the England international is returning to his best form just in time for the club’s push for fourth spot.
“Stevie is always a key player for us. He is an inspiration, on and off the pitch. He showed in the game he is fully fit now and he is coming back strong,” Reina told Liverpool’s website.
“We all love playing against Everton because they are special games. For local lads like Stevie, Spearo or Carra, those games mean a lot – and the rest of us know how important they are for the club.”
The 3-0 victory over Everton at Anfield moved Liverpool back to within 10 points of fourth-placed Arsenal with 10 games remaining.
And Reina vowed the Reds will keep fighting in the race to qualify for next season’s Champions League – and the 29-year-old also has eyes on a FA Cup final appearance with Liverpool set to face Stoke City in the last-eight at Anfield on Sunday.
“It’s difficult. You have to be realistic, but we will fight and we won’t give up until the end [in the race for fourth],” added Reina.
“This team has got very strong character and we will keep fighting, that’s for sure.”
“We’ll take it game by game. We have an even bigger game on Sunday against Stoke and it’s another trophy we have a chance to win and that’s what this football club wants.
“It’s a cup final for us. It’s a chance to go back to Wembley and that would make us all happy.
“We have all experienced this season what going to Wembley means and it would be very, very special to go back.”
