Ashley Young has warned Manchester United to take the threat posed by Wigan Athletic seriously ahead of the Red Devils trip to the DW Stadium on Wednesday night.

Roberto Martínez’s side have only suffered one defeat in their last five games including a remarkable 2-1 victory over Liverpool at Anfield.

United have moved eight points clear of title rivals Manchester City after Roberto Mancini’s side drew with Stoke City and Sunderland, and lost to Arsenal over the past fortnight.

“We’ve got to be on our toes and be ready for a tough game,” Young told United’s website.

“I’m sure if we can show the confidence, desire and winning mentality we’ve shown throughout the season, we’ll get the win.

“We’re just ticking the games off as we go along and staying focused on each one,” he added.

“You obviously want to play well, but at this stage of the season it’s more about results. You just want the three points from every game.

“We’re eight points clear at the moment but that could end up meaning nothing if we don’t keep our run going.”

United have scored all of the last 23 goals in this fixture, and the former Aston Villa midfielder has a good record against the Latics.

“I scored my last goal for Villa against Wigan last season at Villa Park and also scored against them away from home, so I’ve enjoyed some decent results against them,” Young added.

“Hopefully there will be another to follow tonight.”
