Jamie Carragher believes there is plenty to play for at Liverpool with places up for the grabs in Kenny Dalglish’s side for the FA Cup final against Chelsea on 5 May.

Liverpool’s hopes of finishing in the top four and securing Champions League football for next season evaporated after winning just twice in 11 league games.

But the Reds, who beat Cardiff City 3-2 on penalties in the Carling Cup final, have the chance to add gloss to a disappointing Premier League campaign with another piece of silverware.

And Carragher insists competition will be fierce for a starting spot for the Wembley showpiece against the Blues.

“It’s all to play for in terms of cup final places,” Carragher told Liverpool’s website.

“But we’re going into these games to get three points because we need to move up the table. Of course, if you perform well in these games, you have a greater chance of playing in the final.

“And certainly, we all want to play in the big games. There are two games now before the final and I’m sure the manager will mix it up because the Fulham game is just before the cup final.

“Saturday’s match could have a similar effect to the Blackburn game. If you look at that game, I think a few of the players forced themselves into the side against Everton through their performances against Blackburn.”

The 34-year-old Liverpool vice-captain featured in the club’s 2-1 victory over Everton in the FA Cup semi-final, and the centre-half maintains he would rather be in a cup final than finish ahead of the Toffees this season.

“We’d like to finish above Everton but I’d rather win the semi-final, like we did against them, than if they were to finish above us,” added Carragher.
