Great Britain men’s and women’s football teams have been handed tough assignments ahead of this summer’s Games, despite being seeded in Tuesday’s draw.

Stuart Pearce’s team were drawn into Group A and will open up against Senegal, who qualified in a play-off against Oman, at Old Trafford on 26 July.

They will then face UAE at Wembley on 29 July before taking on two-times Olympic champions Uruguay at the Millennium Stadium on 1 August in a group that GB will be confident of progressing from.

“Uruguay will be tough but I wouldn’t dismiss anyone,” said Pearce. “The addition of three overage players can contribute to a really strong side.

“It will be tough, tournament football always is. Everyone in the squad will have star quality but I’ll pick the squad on merit.

“The squad may not reflect every home nation and celebrity but they will be the best 18 players who have the best opportunity to deliver a gold. That’s my only criteria.”

GB women were drawn first into Group E and will open up in the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff against New Zealand on 25 July.

Hope Powell’s team will then play Cameroon, also in Cardiff on 28 July before they finish up against Brazil at Wembley on 31 July.

The other men’s groups saw Mexico, South Korea, Gabon and Switzerland in Group B, Brazil, Egypt, Belarus and New Zealand in Group C, with Spain, Japan, Honduras and Morocco making Group D.

France, Colombia and North Korea joined USA in Group G, while Japan, Canada, Sweden and South Africa were put in Group F.

The draw, which included Brazil football legend Ronaldo, was held at Wembley Stadium, the venue for the gold medal matches.
