Roberto Di Matteo deserves Chelsea success, says Frank Lampard
Frank Lampard heaps praise on Chelsea's interim boss Roberto Di Matteo after guiding the Blues to the Champions League final
Frank Lampard has heaped praise on Chesea’s “amazing” interim manager Roberto Di Matteo after the Blues’ 3-2 aggregate victory against Barcelona secured their place in the Champions League final on Tuesday night.
Di Matteo replaced Andre Villas-Boas in March with the Blues in disarray following a 3-1 defeat by Napoli in the first leg of their last-16 tie in Italy.
And the 38-year-old has managed to dramatically transform Chelsea’s ailing season with 10 victories in 15 games, with an FA Cup final and Champions League final to look forward to in May.
“He [Di Matteo] deserves it,” said Frank Lampard. “I can’t speak highly enough of him.
“Look at the record. It’s not a coincidence. He’s got the group [together] and created a spirit and a determination within the players we have here.
“What he’s done in getting a result like tonight’s [Tuesday] is amazing.”
Looking ahead to the showpiece in Munich on 19 May, Salomon Kalou believes the Blues have enough quality to win the trophy for the first time, despite the suspensions of Branislav Ivanović, John Terry, Ramires and Raul Meireles.
“It’s going to be a shame we can’t have everyone for the final but with the players we have I think we can do a good job,” said the Chelsea forward.
Gary Cahill was forced off after 12 minutes with an injury and the former Bolton Wanderers defender admitted he was more nervous watching from the sidelines than actually playing at Camp Nou.
“I couldn’t watch it,” said Cahill. “I was about four times more nervous watching it than playing.
“I was just genuinely praying that it would go alright and thankfully in the end it did.”
