Arsène Wenger admitted a draw was a fair result after his Arsenal side edged closer to a third-place finish with a point at Stoke City on Saturday.

Peter Crouch had headed Tony Pulis’s men into a ninth-minute lead, but Robin van Persie was on hand to tap home Tomas Rosicky’s searching cross in the 15th minute to level the scoring.

Both sides had chances to win it in the second half but neither were able to find the net after the break – and Wenger was satisfied with a result that keeps the Gunners in third place, four points ahead of fourth-placed Newcastle.

“We prepared mentally to face a big battle today and we got what we expected,” Wenger told BBC Sport. “We prepared to play our game and we did that as well.

“It was a good game, with two different styles, two different approaches. In the end a point is fair.”

Van Persie netted his 28th league goal of the season at the Britannia Stadium – and Wenger heaped yet more praise on his striker after he collected the PFA and Football Writers’ player of the season awards last week.

“He has what you expect from every big player: exceptional class. The quality of his passing is great and he has added something to his game that has convinced everyone that he is a great fighter.”
