Carles Puyol looks set to miss this summer’s European championship after Barcelona confirmed he will require surgery on a knee injury.

The Spain defender experienced discomfort in his knee during Barcelona’s La Liga victory over Espanyol at Camp Nou at the weekend.

And Barcelona released a statement on Tuesday, saying: “After tests were conducted it was decided he would have arthroscopic surgery on 12 May.”

Puyol, 34, is likely to be sidelined for six weeks, with Spain coach Vincente del Bosque set to announce a provisional squad on 15 May before confirming his side’s final line-up on 27 May.

The centre-half was ruled out for three months earlier in the season with a knee injury. Spain kick off their Euro 2012 campaign with a Group C clash against Italy on 10 June.
