Roberto Di Matteo hailed his Chelsea side’s resilient attitude since he took the Stamford Bridge reigns after the Blues’ FA Cup triumph over Liverpool on Saturday.

The Italian coach has masterminded a dramatic turnaround since taking over from André Villas-Boas in early March, with the Blues having failed to find consistent form under the young Portuguese coach.

Di Matteo has led the Blues to FA Cup glory with victory over Liverpool, after his side booked their place in the Champions League final by knocking out holders Barcelona in the semi-finals.

And the Chelsea interim coach believes his squad have responded to the criticism directed at them during Villas-Boas’s turbulent spell in charge.

“I’m very happy for the players,” said Di Matteo. “We’ve had a difficult season, with lots of criticism, but the players responded to all the adversity we’ve faced. They answered their critics on the pitch, the most important place.

“I was very pleased with our performance against Liverpool because our record lately hasn’t been good against them, but we played well for most of the game and scored two good goals.”

Saturday’s win has increased calls for Di Matteo to be handed the job on a permanent basis – but the 41-year-old insists it is not an issue he has given much thought to.

The Chelsea boss added: “At the moment I just want to enjoy today. Whatever comes next, we’ll deal with it, the boss will make the decision but I’m very relaxed about it.”
