Chelsea chief executive Ron Gourlay has given nothing away after being quizzed over the future of interim head coach Roberto Di Matteo.

Di Matteo was placed in temporary charge following Andre Villas-Boas’s dismissal back in March and oversaw a remarkable turnaround at Stamford Bridge, leading the Blues to an FA Cup and Champions League double.

The 41-year-old Italian has had his status as the frontrunner and fans’ favourite for the permanent role underlined by Chelsea’s success in Munich – but Gourlay insists no decision has yet been made by the club.

“He’s done fantastically well, I’m really proud of him and what he achieved,” Gourlay told Sky Sports News.

“When he was given the job as interim coach we said ‘let’s get through to the end of the season, we’ll set ourselves goals and then when that season ends we’ll sit down and discuss things’.

“While we hoped to get to Munich, at that time we didn’t know we were going to get there and so we just asked him to give us his best and let’s see where we go. Everyone got behind him and here we are.

“Now we’ve got to sit down over the next week or two and do what’s right for the football club and I know the fans will be pushing for Robbie but we’ve got to look at the season, see what worked for us, see what mistakes we made and put those right and take it forward.”
