Cahill, Cole, and Lampard could help England to glory

Reading the runes of how the Chelsea players reacted in the immediate aftermath to winning the Champions League spells promise for England’s chances at the European championship this summer.

What we already knew – that there are some incredible egos residing at Stamford Bridge – was confirmed in the limelight-hogging celebrations of Jose Bosingwa, Saloman Kalou and John Terry.

But the players who really won the day, Petr Cech, Ashley Cole, Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba to name four, were all happy to wait their turn in handling the trophy.

And when they did get their paws on it they ensured the supporters got close to it, in the case of Lampard, gave the fans a true spectacle of world class celebrating, in the case of Drogba, or were nonplussed by it all, in the case of Cole and Cech.

The fact that Lampard, Cole, and Gary Cahill didn’t go totally bonkers shows that all they care for is the score-line and that attitude will be needed if England are to get anywhere at Euro 2012.

Of course, that mindset needs to be shared by the rest of the squad but three’s a good start.

If Chelsea’s players can spread their new mood then for the first time in four international tournaments we might be going in with a potentially winning mentality.

Rosicky injury a major blow to Czech’s Euro 2012 hopes

Arsenal midfielder Tomas Rosicky is a major doubt for Euro 2012 after suffering a muscle injury – and the Czech Republic now look doubtful to reach the knockout stages of the tournament.

Rosicky has been in inspirational form for Arsenal in the second-half of the season since scoring against Tottenham Hotspur in February – he has gone on to make 38 appearances for the Gunners – his highest total since moving to north London from Borussia Dortmund in 2006.

Such has been Rosicky’s form for Arsenal that he has won himself a new two-year contract at the club and has forced the likes of Aaron Ramsey, Gervinho and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on to the substitute’s bench for the second-half of the season.

For the first time since suffering a career-threatening thigh injury in 2007 – Rosicky has looked like the free-scoring midfielder again who had previously dominated international tournaments for his nation.

Group A includes Russia, Poland and Greece, and is ultimately very winnable for the Czech Republic but only if they can get their skipper and talisman, Rosicky, fit and ready to go.

Viktoria Plzen midfielder Vladimír Darida has been added to the squad as precautionary measure as Rosicky faces a race-against-time to be fit for this summer’s showpiece event.

Rosicky will face Arsenal colleagues Andrey Arshavin, Wojciech Szczesny and Lukasz Fabiański in Group A, as the Gunners most likely battle with Russia and Poland to progress to the knock-out stages.
