Hazard has not heeded the warnings of signing for Chelsea

Eden Hazard could be ruining his career as and when he arrives at Chelsea – a club that has never made room for a player of his ilk.

The Belgian playmaker has stopped flirting with Twittersphere and revealed he is to sign for the Champions League winners – he needs to get himself a new set of advisers.

Juan Mata is deployed as a luxury item in the current Chelsea set-up, his passing and movement is aesthetically pleasing but not game-changing.

Similarly, Deco had his flashes of brilliance for the Blues but never controlled the tempo of games the way someone like Luka Modrić does and until Frank Lampard is grey and old, they will continue to shy away from giving a play-maker the licence take control.

In effect, that will see Hazard chip in with the odd superb goal and sublime bit of skill next season, more often than not in the Champions League, but he will not lead the way in dragging Chelsea into a new era, something that is looking increasingly like a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

Signing of Rodriguez would bolster Saints survival bid

Southampton boss Nigel Adkins has achieved back-to-back promotions since taking over the reins in 2010, and led the side back to the Premier League.

This was achieved with an attractive, flowing style of football with plenty of goals, whether from prolific lower league marksmen Ricky Lambert who hit 31, Billy Sharp (19) or Adam Lallana (13).

But Adkins is canny enough to know reinforcements are needed at the right price if Saints are to stay up next season, particularly if Lambert or Lallana spend any time on the physio’s table.

Southampton have reportedly had a £7m bid for Burnley forward Jay Rodriguez accepted by the Clarets, and the 22-year-old could be a canny piece of business.

Rodriguez, who has pace and can play as a central striker or out wide, missed out on Burnley’s season in the Premier League with injury but bounced back in 2010/11 to finish the campaign as the Clarets’ top scorer with 15 goals in all competitions.

He repeated the trick this season hitting the back of the net 21 times to earn a place in the PFA Championship Team of the Year despite missing the last two months of the season with hip and groin problems.

Saints had a bid for Rodriguez turned down 12 months ago, and Burnley reportedly refused a £5.5m offer from Cardiff City in May.

But it looks like Southampton’s determination has been rewarded, and Rodriguez could prove part of the “natural evolution” Adkins is looking forward to make sure his side don’t make an immediate return to the second tier.
