Norwich City’s John Ruddy has been ruled out of next month’s European championship after the England goalkeeper broke his finger in training on Thursday.

The 25-year-old was called up to the national squad for the first time by newly-appointed manager Roy Hodgson alongside fellow goalkeepers Joe Hart and Rob Green, with the Canaries shot-stopper impressing for Paul Lambert’s side in the Premier League last season.

Hodgson will replace Ruddy with Birmingham City’s Jack Butland, with the 19-year-old previously on the standby list, and he will join up with his new England team-mates ahead of the warm-up game against Belgium on 2 June.

Butland is yet to make his debut for Chris Hughton’s side and spent last season on loan at Cheltenham Town, conceding 26 goals in 24 appearances for the League Two outfit.

“Since he [Butland] came to us nothing seems to fluster him. He’s a freak of nature,” Cheltenham goalkeeping coach Steve Book told BBC Gloucestershire.

“He’s 19 and he’s ticking all the right boxes. He’s calm and collected and knows what he can do – in fact, there isn’t a lot he can’t do. He’s going to be a very good goalkeeper.

“He’s got all the right tools to be a top-class goalkeeper and I think Birmingham recognised that when he was 15. He’s physically right, but whether he needs a bit more experience between the sticks, playing in big games remains to be seen.”

Twitter reaction to Ruddy’s injury:

Nat Whitney (‏@whitters1993) sums up the emotions of the England supporters: “Gutted for John Ruddy. He’s had such a great season and now injury rules him out of Euros contention.”

Paul Beevis ‏(@BovLaden) believes Ruddy will bounce back: “Gutted for John Ruddy. Quality keeper but he definitely has England in his future.”

Meanwhile, Andrew Lee ‏(@spudlee83) disagrees with the decision to call-up Butland: “I’d like to have seen Fraiser Forster giving a go after John Ruddy had to pull out injured #GreatKeeper”
