Olympic hurdles champion Sally Gunnell has helped to unveil the Royal Mail’s Gold Medal stamps set be issued for each Team GB triumph during London 2012.

Royal Mail are aiming to honour the achievements of every Great Britain success at the London Olympics, which run from 27 July to 12 August, by issuing a next-day stamp for each gold medal won by Team GB.

The stamps will feature photographs of the British athlete or team in action from their gold medal-winning performance, an image from a heat, or their special moment of recognition on the podium.

It marks a first for a host nation and is a new venture for Royal Mail, who have never before issued next-day stamps.

The stamps will be available to purchase by lunchtime the day after GB’s gold medal success at 500 selected Post Offices across the UK – they will also be distributed three times during the Games to a further 4,500 Post Offices.

Team GB are aiming to surpass their ta of 19 gold medals at the Beijing Olympics in 2008 in London this summer, and Royal Mail are hoping to issue many Gold Medal stamps to honour Britain’s success.

“Royal Mail is proud to be involved in this once in a lifetime event and to recognise the success of Team GB,” said Royal Mail chief executive Moya Greene.

“Our Gold Medal stamps will be unique souvenirs of the Games, marking the great achievements of our talented athletes.

“They will be a special way for people across the country to celebrate Team GB’s gold medal wins and help mark their amazing achievement.

“We look forward to issuing many Gold Medal stamps to honour Team GB’s victories.”

Additionally, as part of the Royal Mail’s London 2012 campaign, ‘Welcome to the Olympic Games’ stamps will go on sale on day of the opening ceremony, before issuing a further set to mark the start of the Paralympics Games.

The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games definitive stamps went on sale in January to mark the beginning of the Olympic year, and this followed the issue of 30 stamps reflecting all the sports set to be competed at the Games in a three-part series between 2009 and 2011.
