Kenny Dalglish felt Liverpool finally got the result they deserved after his side gained a degree of revenge for their FA Cup final defeat with a comprehensive victory over Chelsea.

The Reds boss has often been forced to defend his side’s displays this season after their top-four challenge evaporated after the turn of the year.

But the Scot was thrilled with the manner of Tuesday’s win, which ended Chelsea’s hopes of finishing in the top four and came just over 48 hours after the Blues triumphed in the FA Cup final at Wembley.

“It was an excellent performance,” said Dalglish. “It’s been seen a few times before here, but the result hasn’t always been as positive as that.

“The players and everyone will be happy we ended on a high note. That performance was on a par with many this season but we’ve not had the results those deserve.

“For us it is a satisfactory evening and I hope the supporters go away happy. I don’t think there are many other places where supporters would turn up and be so supportive, especially after the cup final.”

Chelsea failed to click into gear at Anfield and were made to pay when Michael Essien deflected Luis Suarez’s cross into his own net in the 20th minute, before Jordan Henderson capitalised on John Terry’s slip and coolly slotted his shot past Ross Turnbull.

Daniel Agger then made it 3-0 before Stewart Downing missed a penalty on the stroke of half-time after Andy Carroll was fouled by Branislav Ivanovic.

Ramires pulled one back for Roberto Di Matteo’s men in the 51st minute but Jonjo Shelvey fired home from 35 yards after collecting Turnbull’s miscued clearance.

“I think Liverpool were better tonight,” said Di Matteo after the game. “They scored at the right time. We hit the post first which could have changed the game, but they deserve to win.

“We’ve got a game on Sunday and we want to finish our last game well to go into the Champions League final in a positive mood.”
