Patrice Evra has urged Manchester United to score early against Sunderland to heap pressure on Manchester City as the Premier League title race reaches its climax on Sunday.

Roberto Mancini’s side face Queens Park Rangers at the Etihad knowing victory will almost certainly guarantee City’s first top flight title in 44 years.

However, Evra believes that if news filters through that the Red Devils have made an impressive start against the Black Cats, City may falter in their attempt to beat Mark Hughes’ side.

“It won’t be easy, but if we score first then maybe the City fans in the stadium will start to be nervous,” Evra told United’s website.

“When you are nervous then you can rush things and you don’t do things as well as you’d like. That’s why we have to make sure we beat Sunderland.

“I don’t think City against Queens Park Rangers is an easy game. So, at the end of the day, we have to believe.”

The 30-year-old French defender, who has won four Premier League titles at United, admits losing their crown to City would be difficult to accept but believes the Red Devils will return stronger next season.

“If we don’t win the league it will hurt a lot of people, but the first person it will hurt will be the manager,” he said.

“But we always bounce back. I trust everyone working for this club. I would never turn my back to Manchester United.

“If we don’t win, all of the players – including myself – will say that we have to do much better if we want to win the league again. So we will try and rebuild something that’s stronger and try and win every competition next season.

“That’s the United way: every year we start the season wanting to win every trophy.

“We need to make sure that next year we give everything to do that.”
