Phil Neville has backed Jordan Henderson to be a success with England after the Liverpool midfielder is called-up to Roy Hodgson’s Euro 2012 squad to replace the injured Frank Lampard on Thursday.

Here, we take a look at some of the reaction on Twitter to the news that Lampard’s Euro 2012 hopes were ended by a thigh injury.

The reaction from the professionals

Everton captain and former England international Phil Neville ‏(@fizzer18) backs Henderson: “Big chance for Jordan Henderson, worked with him in under-21s and was very impressed. A level headed lad with good quality!”

England and Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere ‏(@JackWilshere) on Lampard’s injury and Henderson’s call-up: “Bad news Lampard is out of Euro 2012. Arguably one of England’s most creative [midfielders]! But big congrats to Jordan Henderson – big chance for him!”

But Queens Park Rangers skipper Joey Barton (‏@Joey7Barton) is concerned about England’s chances: “Just been out playing golf. Frank Lampard being out is a massive blow for England. I am beginning to worry that with all the injuries and suspensions, we will not make it out of the groups! Hope I am wrong!”

Henderson’s Liverpool team-mate Charlie Adam ‏(@Charlie26Adam) is clearly delighted for the midfielder: “Just seen Jordan Henderson has been called up, buzzing for him and his family great lad.”

Former England striker John Fashanu ‏(@JohnFashanu) is not so pleased: “If Lampard is out of the tournament, Roy Hodgson needs to make a grovelling phone call to Paul Scholes or Michael Carrick immediately. Henderson is a joke.”

Former Cyprus international Tom Williams (‏@MrTomWilliams): “How can you replace Gareth Barry and Frank Lampard with Phil Jagielka and Jordan Henderson???”

England supporters have their say

Mike Spence (‏@mikespence8) puts the situation into a motoring perspective: “Gutted for Frank Lampard. Jordan Henderson is in. Like swapping a Range Rover for a second hand Ford Fiesta!”

And Max Simister (‏@Max_JSimo) thinks there was a more suitable replacement: “Why has Henderson been called up to replace Frank Lampard when there is a perfectly fit Michael Carrick who has had a great season?”

Michael Ajewole ‏(@MikeMan01) is not happy: “I come home from a long ass day to hear Lampard is out of #Euro2012 !! Highly upsetting!”

And Dan Chesters ‏(@Dan_Chesters) reckons Lampard’s England career is now over: “I feel for Lampard, probably won’t play in an international competition again.”

Meanwhile, Gabriel Speechly (‏@ChelseaSpeech) believes there are other players in the squad who can fill the void left by Lampard: “Personally I think James Milner is decent replacement for Lampard alongside Scott Parker in deeper role. Very able midfielder with good ability #believe”

And finally…

The Anfield Cat (‏@AnfieldCat) doesn’t think it will affect England too much: “Jordan Henderson proves himself the ideal replacement for Frank Lampard by not being able to play next to Steven Gerrard.”
