Aiden McGeady has responded to Roy Keane’s recent criticism of the Republic of Ireland winger ahead of the European championship next month.

The former Ireland and Manchester United captain called into question McGeady’s recent form at international level, with the 26-year-old currently playing for Russian side Spartak Moscow.

Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni included McGeady in his 23-man squad for Euro 2012 in Poland and Ukraine, with the Celtic youth graduate providing the assist for Keith Andrews’ opener in their 4-0 victory over Estonia in the first leg of their play-off.

McGeady, who played with Keane for half a season at Parkhead, hit back at the 40-year-old’s criticism, and defended his contribution to Ireland’s successful qualifying campaign for this summer’s tournament.

“Roy Keane, he says enough anyway. I played with him at Celtic and that was bad enough,” McGeady said.

“He is just one of those guys who has something to say about everything. I got on with him as a guy but he is just one of those guys who has an opinion on everything.”

“I never saw it, but they [former players] are entitled to their opinion.

“Over the qualifying campaign, I was probably not great in every game, but I know – not being big headed – that I was probably one of the main players.

“When other people talk about the ’final ball’, that is their opinion, but who set up more goals than me in the qualifiers?

“Possibly because I don’t get one [cross] in every time, I get criticised.”
