Shay Given is desperate for his former club Manchester City to win the Premier League this term – but admits a trip to Newcastle United will be a difficult test for the leaders on Sunday.

Given, who spent two-and-a-half seasons at Eastlands, is keen to see his former team-mates end City’s 44-year wait for the top flight title this season.

The 36-year-old believes it would be a refreshing change for English football to see another club win the league crown after Manchester United’s recent dominance.

“It’s fantastic for the Premier League if Manchester City do win it, because Manchester United have won it enough times,” Given told BBC Radio Five Live.

“I’ve got lots of friends at Manchester City and it would be fantastic if they could pick the trophy up, but they have got a tough game at my old club Newcastle at the weekend.

“I think they’re in the driving seat and hopefully they can get across the line.”

The Republic of Ireland goalkeeper also defended City’s track record in the transfer market, dismissing the suggestion that the Eastlands outfit have merely “bought success”.

“Years ago I was at Blackburn and Jack Walker had a lot of money and he invested in the team and Blackburn Rovers won the league, and I think if you look at the recent success of Chelsea and Manchester United they have had lots of investment in the team too,” Given added.

“It’s just that Manchester City have done it over a shorter period than the bigger clubs. But it’s part and parcel of modern-day football.”
