Stuart Lancaster expects Mike Tindall to be playing with a chip on his shoulder when he lines up against England at Twickenham for the Barbarians later this month.

Tindall has not featured for England since their ill-fated World Cup campaign in New Zealand last autumn and was not picked by Lancaster during the Six Nations.

Since then Lancaster has been given the England job on a full-time basis and in picking his 42-man squad for the summer tour to South Africa, favoured uncapped duo George Lowe and Jonathan Joseph ahead of 33-year-old Tindall.

Tindall, who has won 75 England caps, has left Gloucester and it remains unclear where he will be playing next season, and while Lancaster believes it’s fitting he will get one more run-out at Rugby HQ, he doesn’t expect the centre to hold back.

“It is great that he is playing,” said Lancaster.

“I am sure Mike has got a lot to prove by playing at Twickenham and I think it is great that he has the opportunity to do that again.

Asked whether it was unlikely that he would pick Tindall, Lancaster said: “I think the way we are going in terms of our squad, and trying to pick a group of players towards 2015, yes.”
