Sir Alex Ferguson described Manchester City as deserving Premier League champions after Manchester United’s victory at Sunderland was not enough to prevent their rivals from winning the title on Sunday.

Wayne Rooney’s 20th-minute strike put the Red Devils in pole position to retain their top-flight crown after Roberto Mancini’s side conceded two second-half goals to leave the Eastlands outfit trailing Queens Park Rangers after Pablo Zabaleta had put City ahead before the interval.

But substitute Edin Dzeko levelled from a corner before Sergio Aguero finished past QPR goalkeeper Paddy Kenny in the fourth minute of stoppage time to deny United a 20th title and spark wild celebrations at the Etihad.

“It was a cruel way [to lose it], but we’ve experienced many ups and downs,” Ferguson told Sky Sports.

“We nearly did it and I’d like to say, on behalf of Manchester United, congratulations to Manchester City.

“Anybody who wins it deserves it, because it’s a long haul. At the end of our game our players didn’t actually know the results. Now, they’re really disappointed, I’m glad to say.

“There’s no other way they should be. They conducted themselves brilliantly today. Their performance level was good. I’m pleased at our performance this season. 89 points would win most league. It wasn’t our turn today.”

The 70-year-old manager believes the experience of narrowly missing out on the Premier League crown will serve the younger members of his United squad well in future title races.

“We take credit in the fact that we’ve had many injuries throughout the season. The experience is good for my players, even if it’s a bad one.”
