Spurs can ill afford a summer of transfer drama

There was a distinct feeling of déjà vu coming out of White Hart Lane on Friday as Harry Redknapp insisted Tottenham Hotspur must keep hold of Luka Modrić and Gareth Bale.

The situation will obviously become a lot clearer once the top four has been finalised and the Champions League final has taken place – but it’s a scenario that Tottenham can ill afford to let dominate their summer again.

Questions about Modrić’s future were aimed at Redknapp all summer and not until the transfer window had closed – with the shrewd acquisitions of Scott Parker and Emmanuel Adebayor made – could Spurs get on with their season.

Redknapp has completely taken himself out of the firing line and dumped all the responsibility at Daniel Levy’s shoulders – but whether Modrić and Bale stay or go is not as important as not letting the saga drag on for months.

Hazard’s snub is a blow to Spurs

Eden Hazard was meant to be heading to White Hart Lane as the symbol of Tottenham’s new status as genuine title contenders.

Three months on and Manchester has been confirmed as his most likely destination, although whether he will be playing in red or blue is still unknown.

The uncertainty surrounding Redknapp’s future with England post available until this week contributed towards a woeful league run which ended any hopes of a title and could yet cost a Champions League spot.

And Spurs now look set to miss out on one of their main transfer targets.

Where Hazard would fit in at the Etihad is open to debate and there are bigger holes at Old Trafford.

Daniel Levy must be fuming at the FA’s messing around and that the resulting implications could stretch well beyond the end of this season.
