Ajax’s Jan Vertonghen plays down Tottenham Hotspur talk
Jan Vertonghen denies reports suggesting the Ajax defender has already agreed to join Tottenham Hotspur this summer
Jan Vertonghen has rejected reports suggesting the Ajax defender has already agreed to join Tottenham Hotspur this summer.
The 23-year-old has been linked with a number of Premier League clubs in recent months, with Spurs and north London rivals Arsenal reportedly leading the chase for the centre-half.
Vertonghen hinted that he could be on his way to a English club in a matter of days at a news conference on Friday held ahead of Belgium’s Euro 2012 warm-up game against England.
“I am a big fan of the Premier League,” he said. “It is almost the only competition I watch on TV and for me it is the best competition in the world.
“I would like to play in the Premier League. I am not in contact every day but I think it could be very close now, maybe a couple of weeks or maybe days.
“I probably know which team I will be going to. I know where I want to go and I think it is clear to everybody.” And when asked if that club is Tottenham, he said: “Yes.”
His words sparked reports claiming he has already agreed a move to White Hart Lane – but he soon took to Twitter to confirm that a deal is yet to be reached.
Don’t believe everything the press writes. Nothing is confirmed. Still player of #Ajax
