Alan Pardew is convinced Gabriel Obertan is on course to impress at Newcastle United next season.

Pardew’s side exceeded expectations with a fifth-place finish in the Premier League last season, narrowly missing out on a spot in the Champions League after an impressive campaign.

The 50-year-old manager was praised for his shrewd acquisitions in the transfer market, with Demba Ba scoring 16 times in 32 appearances and January signing Papiss Cisse netting 13 goals before the end of the season.

However, Pardew has backed ex-Manchester United midfielder Obertan and Sylvain Marveaux, who missed most of the campaign with a hip injury, to make a big impact at St James’ Park over the coming months.

“This is going to be a different year, you have to remember that. Different players will come in and out of form – it won’t just be about those who done well last year,” Pardew told the Newcastle Evening Chronicle.

“I am expecting Gabby Obertan and Sylvain Marveaux to be back and raring to go. They are two players that can have big seasons for us next year. There is Sammy Ameobi and Shane Ferguson as well.

“It is a year further down the line for them and they will get their chances to do well for us. It is a chance to see how they develop.”

Obertan made 28 appearances for Manchester United in two seasons at Old Trafford before agreeing a £2m transfer to the Magpies in August 2011.
