Jamie Redknapp believes Brendan Rodgers will implement Barcelona’s infamous ‘tiki-taka’ style at Liverpool after the Northern Irishman was unveiled as the new Anfield boss on Friday.

Rodgers’ Swansea City side were lauded for their attractive and possession-based style of football which resulted in a 11th-place finish in their first season in the Premier League.

And former Liverpool midfielder Redknapp is expecting the 39-year-old to implement a similar tactic at the Merseyside club – and he believes the club’s supporters can anticipate an expansive brand of football next season.

“He wants his teams to pass in all areas,” Redknapp told Liverpool’s website.

“He has used a system that has worked in Spain, especially for Barcelona – principally the two centre halves split, the full backs push on and the holding midfielder steps in and plays from there.

“Everyone is encouraged to get on the ball, take risks, pass it, keep it. Liverpool will be playing the tiki-taka style.

“This squad should be excited about working with Brendan because he won’t waste a training session, where he will be working with the ball and teaching them how to break down other teams.”

Meanwhile, Redknapp’s former Liverpool team-mate Robbie Fowler believes Rodgers’ experience of working under Jose Mourinho at Chelsea will prove invaluable as he takes the reigns at Anfield.

“For what Brendan Rodgers has achieved at Swansea, he deserves huge respect,” added Fowler.

“He’s worked under Jose Mourinho at Chelsea so he knows the score and he’s worked with top players. It will be a massive step-up for Rodgers to manage Liverpool.”
